Emergency Contraception - The "Morning After" Pill
How does the emergency contraceptive or "morning after" pill work?
The emergency contraceptive pill contains a form of the hormone progesterone. It works in several ways to prevent pregnancy from occurring. Some of these are:
The progesterone can stop the release of an egg from the ovary.
The progesterone can prevent fertilization (the uniting of the sperm and the egg).
The progesterone will prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.
Progesterone thickens the mucus of the cervix, making it hard for sperm to reach the egg.
