LEEP/LLETZ
How is the LEEP procedure done? Can the LEEP procedure be done in my doctor's office?

The LEEP procedure can be done in the office or in an operating room.  Your doctor will explain to you where he or she will perform the LEEP.
  • You will lie on a treatment table and put your feet in stirrups, just as you would for a pelvic exam.
  • Your doctor may look through an instrument called a colposcope, which is similar to a magnifying glass
  • The doctor will put a solution on the cervix to highlight the problem areas on the cervix
  • The doctor will numb the cervix with a local anesthetic
  • The LEEP is then performed with the wire loop and the abnormal areas will be removed. The loop is used to scoop out the abnormal tissue in one piece and to seal any bleeding blood vessels
  • A medicated paste will be put on the cervix to further reduce the risk of bleeding
