Over the Counter Medications
Can you tell me which drugs are safe to use?

It is important to speak with your doctor before you start any medicine.  There are two very important reasons for this.  The first is to make sure that the symptoms which you are suffering from are not serious, and the second is to make sure that the medicine is safe to use in pregnancy.

Some of the most commonly used over-the counter medications during pregnancy include:

  • Pain - Tylenol
  • Cold - Robitussin DM, Sudafed, saline nose drops
  • Constipation - Metamucil, Colace, Senokot
  • Wound ointments - bacitracin, neosporin
  • Acid Reflux and stomach upset - Maalox, Mylanta, Tums
  • hemorrhoids - Preparation H, Anusol, Tucks, Witch hazel
  • rash - Hydrocortisone cream or ointment, Caladryl lotion or cream, Benadryl cream, Oatmeal bath (Aveeno)
  • Allergy - benadryl
  • Yeast Infection - Monistat (be careful when inserting applicator)
This is not meant to endorse the above products or to recommend that you use them.  Speak with your health care provider first.  This list is only a list of common over-the-counter medicines that are used by pregnant women, and are not known to have any associated significant negative impact on pregnancy.
