Prescription Medications

Do I have to stop taking my prescription medication as soon as I get pregnant?

Your first choice should be to discuss all of your medications with your doctor before you become pregnant.  This way he or she can help you switch to medications that are safe for pregnancy before your baby is conceived.  However, for many people pregnancy comes by surprise.  If you find that you are pregnant and you are taking medications for a chronic problem, call your doctor immediately.  Do not stop the medicine without speaking with your doctor first, as whatever you are treating will then not be treated properly.  In most cases your doctor will be able to prescribe a course of therapy that will be safe to continue while you are pregnant.
