What type of health care professional should I ask about genetic diseases?

There are many types of health care professionals, and it is often difficult to know where to go.  If you have a known condition, and you have a special doctor who is treating you, than he or she will be your best resource.  However, if you are just interested in screening or finding out your risks, you can really speak with any health care professional that you trust. If they feel that it is not in their scope of practice, they will refer you to the proper place.

However, the ideal person to speak with is a professional that specializes in genetic disorders and their transmission.  Your obstetrician is a good start, and they may refer you to the best resource.  The best resource would be a trained and certified genetic counselor.  A genetic counselor is a specially trained professional who can spend the time with you to really find your particular risks and help you decide what types of testing are right for you.
